All that in one little grain
Quinoa is one amazing little grain.
. Remember not all carbs are evil, quinoa is one of the good guys, a complex carbohydrate, meaning it will leave you feeling fuller for longer and be less likely to turn to fat, yay! It is also incredibly high in fibre, another weight loss benefit. It is full of vitamins and minerals such as iron, magnesium (but not as much as cacao!) and manganese (an antioxidant), so are you sold yet?
Well I have been sold for a while, however I could never really fit it into my diet, I didn’t know how to cook it properly
and I rarely eat grains so I didn’t know what to do with it, but I am learning.
It’s so easy to make – simply put it in a pot with water (1 cup of quinoa to 2 cups of water) and let it boil away for
around 15 minutes, checking and stirring it as it cooks. When it’s cooked fluff it up with a fork and Voila!
Here are 5 tips on adding quinoa into your diet….
- Boil up a batch and put it in the fridge, it will last at least 5 days in a covered container. Then add it to your salads, it will add a yummy crunch and up the protein content all in one hit.
- Add a cup of cooked quinoa to your stir fry a few minutes before it’s ready. It will take on all the flavours in the wok, add a different texture to the meal and fill you up for longer.
- Use it instead of rice with curries or stews.
- Boil up ½ cup of quinoa (in 1 cup of water) and add some coconut or extra virgin olive oil, a squeeze of lemon and some salt and pepper, you have a quick easy light meal!
- Instead of fried rice do a fried quinoa. Using it exactly as you would rice, cook it first then fry up your favourite vegies with onion, garlic, ginger and tamari (a healthier version of soy sauce) add in the cooked quinoa
and you have a new winter comfort food.
So go on now you have no excuses, try a little bit of the wonder grain today!

Tried this little grain nothing really to dislike, I sprinkled it over my salad and also had some in a stir fry, it takes on the flavour of whatever you put it with, easy to prepare, reminds me a little of couscous. Will now try out the other varieties as I noticed a couple of different colours (black, red) not sure if they are any more nutritious or not:) Thanks for sharing and giving me ideas:)
Always wanted to try it but had no idea what to do with it so thanks for the ideas!!! love your tips/ideas like to try new things keep them coming. x
